It’s breakfast time at Dukem, the popular Ethiopian restaurant on U Street NW, but Thomas “Tommy T” Gobena orders lunch. In a city of red-eyed, Cinnabon-scarfing frequent fliers, he might be the most jet-lagged man in Washington.

Gobena lives in Alexandria but will spend most of this new year in the air and on the road, playing bass for Gogol Bordello, a merry band of self-branded “Gypsy punks” scheduled to hit about 200 stages across the globe in 2010. Days earlier, Gobena was wowing a crowd of 20,000 in Mexico City. In a few days, he’ll be at it again in St. Petersburg, Russia.

With a hyper-kinetic live show that’s part ramshackle cabaret, part rock-and-roll exorcism and part culture-mashing swirl, Gogol Bordello seems to translate loud and clear on almost every corner of the planet. For the band on tour, border crossing becomes both a musical and literal pursuit.

“I’m not really a loud person,” Gobena says, sipping cinnamon tea at Dukem. “But I can say this about the band. . . . You don’t have to be huge fan. You don’t have to buy the CD and follow us everywhere. But if you come to the show you won’t go back.”

Gogol Bordello performs at Washington’s 9:30 club Saturday and Sunday, and is fronted by the irrepressible Eugene Hütz– a sort of Ukrainian Iggy Pop whose good looks and wild-style charisma have earned him Hollywood film roles and collaborations with Madonna. The band is based in New York but its members hail from Israel, Scotland, Russia, Ecuador, the United States — and in the case of Gobena, Ethiopia by way of Northern Virginia.

An Aussie in the Grand Canyon

LA was my landing point for mytrip to visit the canyons. OK so I got used to driving on the other side of the road and OK despite having a GPS it wasn’t easy coming to grips with spaghetti like highway intersections and I was soon lost as we attempted to leave LA and head for Grand Canyon. So I did what sorta comes naturally which was to stop at a petrol (oops sorry gas) station to ask for directions. Simple enough !! can you believe it, the attendant at the first one never heard of the Grand Canyon and the second asked which state it was in.

Eventually I managed to make my way out of San Bernardino and upon arriving at the South Rim immediately understood why the Grand Canyon was so named. For the uninitiated (and I am numbered among them) just remember that you arrive at the top of the Canyon which is a mile high vertically which means the air is thinner and therefore means that unless you are fit, avoid that quick dash as you will rapidly run out of breath.

I made sure that I found a good spot to catch the rising sun and was up bright an early the next morning (6am actually) and quickly made my way to the spot I wanted, walking in the semi darkness and freezing cold as it was already autumn. To my surprise when I arrived at the appointed spot, I found nearly 30 other photographers already gathered there. Never have I been anywhere in Australia where I had to “fight” for space to photograph the rising sun in the morning ever before.

 

Unfortunately the sunrise pictures did not turn out as I would have wished but this was amply made up by the sunset which I managed to witness from the viewing point called Desert View. For this trip, I had left my Pentax DA 18-55mm MkII zoom lense behind in favour of the Sigma 18-125mm APO zoom lens and it did make life a little easier having the longer focal length range to play with without having to change lenses.

Maryam kidnappad till Irak

- Jag har pratat med henne i telefon. Hon lät trött och förstår inte riktigt vad som hänt, säger hennes mamma Wafaa.

Maryam Ali Abdulhadi, 4, försvann under nyårsfirandet på Gustav Adolfs torg i Malmö och ett stort polispådrag har sedan dess letat efter henne. För mamma Wafaa har de senaste dygnen varit mycket jobbiga.
- Jag kan inte sova. Jag tänker på henne hela tiden och jag gråter mycket, säger hon.

Fuck you 2010! Already? YES!

OK, 1st off let me thank this new year and it’s fate/chance/karma driven wheels of randomness for reinforcing my disappointment with the human race as a whole.

The facts are these:

1.  When we as a people encounter someone that believes in previous lives(not Buddhist past lives …like new age non-researched “I like the sound of that” past lives), said person was always someone more important than the person they are now.  It never ceases to amaze me how many Joan of Arcs, Ghandis, Charlemagnes, or Alexander the Greats I have met that were reincarnated into Gap salespeople, convenience store workers, or fast food chefs .  Not one person , NOT ONE, has ever said ” I was a peasant farmer in what is present day Turkey, who died at 22 of venereal disease.”  Statistically that would be infinitely more probable than Alexander the Great, Mata Hari, or Thomas Jefferson.  Do you ever hear that?  No.  Why you ask?  Because no one wants to believe this is it.  The lack of present fame or future glory MUST be compensated by a fictional past.  SHIT.

2.  Musicians are suing local MOM AND POP bars for playing their fucking music???  Oh yeah, You read that right  READ MORE Where did the years go when exposure…free exposure was a GOOD thing.  Fuck me!

3.  What the fuck is going on where a VOLUNTEER, who is hearing impaired, is refused a VOLUNTEER position where the ability to hear is UNNEEDED!  A colleague of mine has been turned down by the NY Aquarium because she was hearing impaired.  She wanted to dive in the tanks and I assume help maintain the glass or whatever needed to be done.  You know to give back, VOLUNTEER, get involved, make a difference…but, NO!  She is hearing impaired and can’t dive.  I have been SCUBA diving for 20 years and NOT ONCE…NOT ONCE has my hearing underwater helped or hindered me at all.  It is a non-issue.  So NY Aquarium, Fuck you and your liability bullshit.  Unreal.  Pres. Obama, I smell volunteer prevention…right here!  God Damnit

It is Jan. 1 and I am already mad at people I don’t know.  Shit.
