2009

This young boy grew up to become the first ‘Black’ President of the United States. And I shed a tear.

He has much to do and expectations that I doubt he will ever manage to achieve but what this man has achieved is a country like the USA… never let anyone tell you you can’t do something.

Yes We Can.

US Government alienated rights of citizen again

It is well beyond 3am CET, and I already napped in, but reading this makes me so angry. US government violated rights given its citizens in a modern democracy. Using scare tactics, they achieved what they wanted. Making the headlines, sending signals. Citizens, bloggers, journalists, reporters have to be treated equally. It is a civic duty to be part of the checks and balances of a modern transparent democratic government. It’s beyond my believe that the US government served again somebody a subpoena because he was an active citizen. TSA Threatens Blogger Who Posted New Screening Directive

Two bloggers received home visits from Transportation Security Administration agents Tuesday after they published a new TSA directive that revises screening procedures and puts new restrictions on passengers in the wake of a recent bombing attempt by the so-called underwear bomber.

[...] interrogated two U.S. bloggers [...]served them each with a civil subpoena demanding information on the anonymous source that provided the TSA document.

[The] document, which was not classified, was posted by numerous bloggers. Information from it was also published on some airline websites.

“They’re saying it’s a security document but it was sent to every airport and airline,” says Steven Frischling, one of the bloggers. “It was sent to Islamabad, to Riyadh and to Nigeria. So they’re looking for information about a security document sent to 10,000-plus people internationally. You can’t have a right to expect privacy after that.”

Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman Suzanne Trevino said in a statement that security directives “are not for public disclosure.”

Frischling, a freelance travel writer and photographer in Connecticut who writes a blog for the KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, said the two agents who visited him arrived around 7 p.m. Tuesday, were armed and threatened him with a criminal search warrant if he didn’t provide the name of his source. They also threatened to get him fired from his KLM job and indicated they could get him designated a security risk, which would make it difficult for him to travel and do his job.

“They were indicating there would be significant ramifications if I didn’t cooperate,” said Frischling, who was home alone with his three children when the agents arrived. “It’s not hard to intimidate someone when they’re holding a 3-year-old [child] in their hands. My wife works at night. I go to jail, and my kids are here with nobody.”

Frischling, who described some of the details of the visit on his personal blog, told Threat Level that the two agents drove to his house in Connecticut from DHS offices in Massachusetts and New Jersey and didn’t mention a subpoena until an hour into their visit.

“They came to the door and immediately were asking, ‘Who gave you this document?, Why did you publish the document?’ and ‘I don’t think you know how much trouble you’re in.’ It was very much a hardball tactic,” he says.

When they pulled a subpoena from their briefcase and told him he was legally required to provide the information they requested, he said he needed to contact a lawyer. The agents said they’d sit outside his house until he gave them the information they wanted.

Frischling says he received the document anonymously from someone using a Gmail account and determined, after speaking with an attorney, that he might as well cooperate with the agents since he had little information about the source and there was no federal shield law to protect him.

“We are a free society, knowledge is power and informing the masses allows for public conversation and collective understanding,” Frischling wrote on his blog. “You can agree or disagree, but you need information to know if you want to agree or disagree. My goal is to inform and help people better understand what is happening, as well as allow them to form their own opinions.”

‘State secrets’ and ‘classified documents’.

subpoena duces tecum – a writ commanding a person to produce in court certain designated documents or evidence

A government which has an interest to hide so-called ’state secrets’ and ‘classified documents’, a government which uses scare & hardball tactics, a subpoena, and coordinated action that a person will eventually lose its job, is a government you can not trust. Period.

This document was not classified, it was sent to thousands of addresses, and it was published from airlines who wanted to inform their customers who have to expect new security measures, while flying to the USA. It is not really about finding out who is the source from within, for the TSA/Department of Homeland Security/Government. This action was a status en quo exemplum.

The source had a moral, it could come from everywhere within the aviation industry (or the TSA or DOHS). In the eyes of the source, it was justifiable act of righteousness to inform the public about the collective punishment because of the failure of the few. The enactment of new flawed security measures. To provide a piece to the big puzzle. So that the public is ‘[allowed] to form their own opinions’. Publishing this document was in the publics interest. When the source will have his last day, he knows he did something good for the greater public.

Judith Miller, New York Times journalist, who failed to disclose a source spent 85 days in jail. What price tag have whistleblowers, journalistic integrity and transparent democracy and government? When did speaking out and informing the public came with consequences? And there should be no differentiator at all.

All the sudden it seems that brave passengers, bloggers and journalists (who have to be equally treated) end up doing what the Department of Homeland Security’s job is.

  • Boardingarea.com — The Fallout From SD-1544-09-06 : The Feds At My Door
  • Wired — TSA Threatens Blogger Who Posted New Screening Directive
  • Shield laws in United States Note: Journalists/Bloggers might not be above the law, but are there to inform the public. Because the above case was in the interest of the public. But who is to judge what is in the interest of the public?! The US Supreme Court has something to do here.

Expanding end note — Loosing Ground.

It is our moral duty for our collective future, to stand behind our inalienable rights as citizens, and behind our fellow citizens who are not average. But it becomes evident, that the problems we are facing, can’t be solved just by the few. All the people have to take action. Because everyone has a stake in the future. Every single meter we step back, step back from the problem, is a meter we have lost.

Frozen Blueberry

I really love shooting tractors, so when I saw this one this morning, I knew I had to capture it in HDR. Unfortunately, once I got home, I noticed the sky was full of dust spots. Took a bit of time to clean it up in post, but I think it turned out pretty well. I had actually planned to shoot in a farm machine graveyard near the same field, but would have had to park really far away and hike in through the snow. Maybe next time!

Peace, Propaganda & the Promised Land (DVD)

U.S. Media & the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict…

Peace, Propaganda & the Promised Land provides a striking comparison of U.S. and international media coverage of the crisis in the Middle East, zeroing in on how structural distortions in U.S. coverage have reinforced false perceptions of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This pivotal documentary exposes how the foreign policy interests of American political elites–oil, and a need to have a secure military base in the region, among others–work in combination with Israeli public relations strategies to exercise a powerful influence over how news from the region is reported. Through the voices of scholars, media critics, peace activists, religious figures, and Middle East experts, Peace, Propaganda & the Promised Land carefully analyzes and explains how–through the use of language, framing and context–the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza remains hidden in the news media, and Israeli colonization of the occupied terrorities appears to be a defensive move rather than an offensive one. The documentary also explores the ways that U.S. journalists, for reasons ranging from intimidation to a lack of thorough investigation, have become complicit in carrying out Israel’s PR campaign. At its core, the documentary raises questions about the ethics and role of journalism, and the relationship between media and politics. Interviewees include Seth Ackerman, Mjr. Stav Adivi, Rabbi Arik Ascherman, Hanan Ashrawi, Noam Chomsky, Robert Fisk, Neve Gordon, Toufic Haddad, Sam Husseini, Hussein Ibish, Robert Jensen, Rabbi Michael Lerner, Karen Pfeifer, Alisa Solomon, and Gila Svirsky.

Foster's; B

The ordering system is complex at this faux-rustic little sandwich shop/marketplace, which caters more to regulars who know their way around the place instead of visitors who don’t know anything. It would seem that you first order your hot drinks from the coffee counter by the door, pay for them, then order your food from the sandwich counter a few steps over. After getting your order ticket, you find a seat (which may involve waiting, if you go during rush hour when it’s too cold to sit in one of the outside lawn chairs facing a four-lane highway) and when ready your food is served to you. You eat…then you go up to the cash register, ruthlessly lined with candied goodies, and pay.

My favorite order these past few years has been an enormous, tender herb biscuit for breakfast/lunch, lightly heated (microwaved), with two pats of butter. The sandwiches are decent, but too heavily buttered when grilled and rather generic and served in papered wicker baskets; soups can be overly peppered. The tiny marketplace consists of a short wall of wine and an eclectic assortment of crackers, spreads, cookie mixes, and candies. The decor and feel have something of a Martha Stewart stamp to it, due to the creator’s past professional involvement with Ms. Stewart; several years back, the store’s feature in a Martha magazine sat prominently framed on the wall.

Despite its flaws, I have always had strong, fond memories of those huge biscuits, and the hot chocolate is acceptable - although mostly whipped cream, it’s at least good, genuine whipped cream, which is more than I can say for its neighboring competitor, Guglhupf.

Help Me Find Mannaz .............Please

So when I was 14 very nearly 15 I finally got the Vans I’d been eyeing up in Schuh for about a year.  I didnt care that my friend at school had the same ones, I’d wanted them longer (my opinion, perhaps not fact).  I had those gorgeous shoes right up till I went off to uni when I decided I’d better chuck them otherwise my mother would.  They were manky by this point like, the material inside at the back was all worn off and the actual backing plastic stuff had cracked.  One pair had a hole right through the sole so that when it rained my feet got soaked (I did try to fix this with masking tape, it didnt work).  I wouldnt be surprised if they stank to high heavens from being so old and ratty.  But I loved them.

Christmas in first year at uni I got a new pair of vans.  Although I liked them I’ve never grown the attachment to them that I had with my first pair.  For days I kept looking online for the ones I orignally had seening as Schuh and the Vans website no longer stock them.  Then the other day I tried again.

Into google images I typed in black and pink Vans and found some that looked like them, their style was Basha I think…but they looked slightly wrong.  Then I found another pair called Mannaz.  My heart jumped with joy when I realised they were my holy grail!  (I then realised I still had the box they had came in and yes it said Mannaz on the label – I could have solved so much more trouble if I’d looked there originally).

So what Im now after is Womens Vans Mannaz, black/confetti pink suede in UK size 5.  The only one’s Ive found are american 5.5 which I think is like UK 3 or something.  I can possibly make do with UK 4 and deffinatelly 4.5.  Has anyone found any?  Does anyone know a shop or website selling them in the correct size?  I really want them back!!

Why Kiva? Why Now?

“We came to this country with two suitcases.” This reminder from my mother imparts to me all that is possible in America with no more than an education and unabashed ambition. Having been born in a developing nation, I have grown up conscious of the gap between the resources and opportunities available to me and those available to less fortunate youth. I have found in my own experience that even in the most devastating poverty, the human spirit can shine triumphantly. There is an ingenuity, a resourcefulness that commandeers the survival strategies of those who are forced to confront poverty. I am driven by a desire to learn from the poor in order to create viable programmatic and policy approaches to empowering disadvantaged populations.
As the client relations director of The Campus Kitchens Project at UF, I serve as both an advocate and liaison for the low-income housing communities and after-school care programs to which we deliver meals. Our holistic approach combines sustainable sources of food donations, with education and empowerment programs designed to provide concrete solutions to hunger in the United States. The challenges and frustrations I have faced in this role have served as invaluable lessons; experiences which will enhance my ability to handle obstacles I might face as a fellow.
Last summer, I volunteered on a service trip to Managua and Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua with a UF student organization called Recurso. I recognized and appreciated a vital aspect of successful development initiatives when our group was asked to build a schoolhouse to replace the packed mud platform and USAID tent that some local children called their school. It was when I saw an army of 40 children in school uniforms carrying bags of gravel, that I understood the importance and power of a local sense of ownership of the schoolhouse project. My time as a volunteer with Recurso led me to become its current president.
My motivation to be a Kiva fellow also stems from my desire to pursue my “self-education,” and I believe this fellowship will provide me with the ideal environment to learn and challenge myself. Many of my interests lie at the intersection of business and development. I am intrigued and inspired by the concept of “patient capitalism” termed by Jacquelyn Novogratz of Acumen Fund. I believe that although aid has a role, long-term growth and progress, specifically in Africa, can only be achieved through investing in local business and encouraging entrepreneurs, in addition to responsible (and patient) foreign investment.
As a soon-to-be college graduate, it is thrilling to have discovered that which inspires such passion within me. The Kiva Fellowship will allow me to employ my business knowledge, research and data analysis skills, and my international and local NGO experience in an exciting and challenging role. It is my desire to be a part of and contribute to the Kiva process by working with a field partner as a fellow.

Is CNN a brainwasher or what

Take a quick look at the CNN site. Right in the middle you see a big column with a big picture with the BIG BULLSHIT NEWS: cloned puppies, Facebook, celebrities. On the left side you see a small column with a small picture with the reallly important news: Senate passes health care reform bill, Ahmadinejad pressed on protests etc.

Ok, maybe not everyone is obsessed with politics, like me, you will say, but isn’t this layout just calling you stupid to your face, for crying out loud?! Isn’t this layout just saying: yeah, this is what the American public wants?! Is it? Really?

Let’s take the case of a young democracy like let’s say… Romania for example. Take any of the major news sites such as: Mediafax or HotNews. What do you see? The important stuff right in your face. For the bullshit you have to dig deeper.

So am I saying that Romania is great and the America sucks? No. I’m saying that even the fucked up corrupted media in Romania is better than the fucking CNN. Even the fucked up media in Romania has more respect for the viewer’s intelligence than the CNN. Amen.

2007 Delectus Cabernet Franc (Knights Valley)

Ruby red color. The nose is big with black cherry, spice box, plum and bell pepper. The palate is also large with the cherry and plum carrying on and the addition of vanilla, and strawberry. The finish is long and picks up a good mineral note to add to the complexity. The fruit was sourced from a mature hillside vineyard across from the Delectus Estate located in Knights Valley in Sonoma County just west of Calistoga. Although this wine is young it is drinking well now. Save some though as it will get better with additional bottle age. Highly recommended.

Weather is not climate...

…but I do understand if people in Northeastern USA sort of doubt global warming right now. Yikes, those are some snowstorms.

Here’s a linked satellite image from USA Today :

Snowstorms

Snowstorms

Meanwhile, everyone keeps saying that the “Copenhagen accord” is a big failure, and that we are now screwed, people are going to die, etc. I think not. I think actually, it was a big success. Because now we have at least 6 more months to raise awareness that the science is in fact NOT settled. You may stare at this code-snippet I have used to import the GHCNv2 gridded data into my SQL database. In anticipation.

public void LoadGridFile(string tableName, string filename, string dir) { Int32 north, south, west, east; String temp; FileStream fs = File.Open(Path.Combine(dir, filename), FileMode.Open); StreamReader sr = new StreamReader(fs); try { conn.Open(); for (int year = 1880; year <= 2009; year++) { Console.WriteLine("Reading year " + year.ToString()); for (int month = 1; month <= 12; month++) { sr.ReadLine(); // Year and month for (int ylat = 90; ylat > -90; ylat -= 5) { string _180_120 = sr.ReadLine(); // -180 to -120, 180W-120W string _120_60 = sr.ReadLine(); string _60_0 = sr.ReadLine(); string _0_60 = sr.ReadLine(); string _60_120 = sr.ReadLine(); string _120_180 = sr.ReadLine(); // 120 to 180, 120E-180E for (int i = 0; i < 5; i++) { Int32 stringOffset = i * 6; Int32 latOffset = i * 5; north = ylat; south = north - 5; /* 1st line */ west = -180 + latOffset; east = west + 5; temp = _180_120.Substring(stringOffset, 6); if (temp == "-32768") temp = "NULL"; RunInsertQuery(tableName, new List() { north.ToString(), south.ToString(), east.ToString(), west.ToString(), year.ToString(), month.ToString(), temp }); /* 2nd line */ west = -120 + latOffset; east = west + 5; temp = _120_60.Substring(stringOffset, 6); if (temp == "-32768") temp = "NULL"; RunInsertQuery(tableName, new List() { north.ToString(), south.ToString(), east.ToString(), west.ToString(), year.ToString(), month.ToString(), temp }); /* 3rd line */ west = -60 + latOffset; east = west + 5; temp = _60_0.Substring(stringOffset, 6); if (temp == "-32768") temp = "NULL"; RunInsertQuery(tableName, new List() { north.ToString(), south.ToString(), east.ToString(), west.ToString(), year.ToString(), month.ToString(), temp }); /* 4th line */ west = 0 + latOffset; east = west + 5; temp = _0_60.Substring(stringOffset, 6); if (temp == "-32768") temp = "NULL"; RunInsertQuery(tableName, new List() { north.ToString(), south.ToString(), east.ToString(), west.ToString(), year.ToString(), month.ToString(), temp }); /* 5th line */ west = 60 + latOffset; east = west + 5; temp = _60_120.Substring(stringOffset, 6); if (temp == "-32768") temp = "NULL"; RunInsertQuery(tableName, new List() { north.ToString(), south.ToString(), east.ToString(), west.ToString(), year.ToString(), month.ToString(), temp }); /* 6th line */ west = 120 + latOffset; east = west + 5; temp = _120_180.Substring(stringOffset, 6); if (temp == "-32768") temp = "NULL"; RunInsertQuery(tableName, new List() { north.ToString(), south.ToString(), east.ToString(), west.ToString(), year.ToString(), month.ToString(), temp }); } } } } } finally { conn.Close(); } }

1873.

That’s what the standard of internet was like in Winter Park.

Hence the lack of updates in the past few days.

Even getting this one online has been a monumental struggle.

Very briefly, before I crash and sleep for 12 hours after 6 days racing out of the past 7, an update from the NorAms in Winter Park..

First up, Super G.

One of my favourite events on a very real, very fast hill, an interesting challenge having not done ANY speed training since September.

Unbelievably day 1 saw another Australian sweep of the podium, however this time it was Toby on top, with Cam pipping me for second by around 3 tenths…

Around 6 gates from the bottom I caught my hand up while dragging it, went down on my hip for a moment and went powder skiing for a few turns. Somehow I kept it going and snuck in front of Adam Hall (NZ) by just 3 hundredths of a second. It was a little disappointing that I couldn’t give Toby a real run for his money, but there were promising signs all the same.

Next up was the Super Combined.

It started out well, I was 4th after the Super G leg.
I made a little error up top, but was happy that I skied the bottom really well after it caused me trouble on day 1.

The Slalom leg, historically my weakest, was less  successful and as expected I slipped back a little, finishing in 6th.

Toby took out the win again, with Cam in 2nd and Canadian, Matt Hallat 3rd.

The hectic movements continue, off to Denver in the morning, Zurich on Sunday.

I’ll attempt to give a better explanation of our schedule at a later date, but for now, this will have to do.

Mitch.

DECAF was a hoax/spoof

It turns out that the guys behind DECAF only released the anti-COFEE software to proselytize.  Or at least, that’s what it looks like to me.  In a post titled “Game Over,” the people behind it have written:

We want to thank every media outlet, financial supporter, security expert, and forensic investigator that showed us support.

As you probably noticed, your copy of DECAF no longer works. We have disabled every copy of DECAF. We hope that as you realize this was a stunt to raise awareness for security and the need for better forensic tools that you would reconsider cutting corners on corporate security. Also, governments should not rely on a tool to automate the process of forensics but rather invest in the education of investigators and forensic tool experts. If we were able to assist every government agency in their computer crime investigations, we would. The problem is DECAF is just two people. As a security community at large, we need to band together and start relieving some of the burden off our government by giving back.

It also goes to show that if two people can make an impact as big as DECAF did; imagine how much positive we could all do together. Lately our media has been presenting many individual people (balloon boy, white house visitors, etc) who have been manipulating media outlets for selfish publicity in hopes of being “successful”. The problem is that America has grown to be selfish, self-reliant, prideful, and a arrogant monster. We leave our marriages, neglect our kids, chase positions/status at work, chase materialistic property and only think of ourselves. In the mean time our whole country goes down the tubes.

These problems individuals are facing are not new. They are due to you trying to fill the void in your life with things of this world. Most everyone has bitter roots, some have been victimized, others are just neglected. You go through the woes of life with no life support.

I too would still be swallowed up in my prideful and selfish ways. I would still be with my addictive behaviors; womanizing, pornography, stealing, hacking, lieing, manipulating, and fighting. DECAF would have been a perfect way to feed my addictions. Instead I used it as a way to bring you a message. A message of freedom, a message of peace, a message of transparency and a message of unity. As you learn a little about me, understand I faced the same things I am speaking about. I didn’t address the fruits of my life, I addressed the bitter roots of my life. Religion didn’t do it for me. Catholicism didn’t do it for me. Athiesm didn’t do it for me. Agnostic didn’t do it for me. Unity and education did it for me. Only one man gets credit for it. Jesus Christ. Once I learned Christ wasn’t about that foolishness I seen on t.v. or seen in other “Christians”, I realized I was missing the point. I couldn’t look past the Christians to see the CHRIST. I accepted Him as my savior and then started putting Him in positions over my life. My life changed and yours can too. It was about relationship.

Romans 10:9 – “That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Well, that’s sort of a weird twist; unexpected, and yet not so much:

  1. A couple of guys release an anti-COFEE software that supposedly does what it does (because, remember, the code was never revealed, leading to speculation that this could’ve been the ultimate malware)
  2. There was that complaint sent to wired.com, where the guys behind DECAF complained about being painted as hackers:

The developers of DECAF have taken issue with Threat Level referring to them as hackers. “We’re just two developers who support the free flow of information and privacy,” one of them wrote Threat Level in an anonymous e-mail. “You could say we’re just average joes.”

Yeah, average joes.  Average joes that decide to release a fake anti-forensics software in order to preach about Jesus and society in general.  Nothing average about that.  Gotta say, though, it’s a hell of a marketing job.

LITTLE CINDY, Happy Birthday Jesus, 1959

Another record I picked up for a dollar in Brattleboro last summer. Little Cindy might be a little more well-known because John Waters put Happy Birthday Jesus on a CD  collection of his favourite Christmas songs a couple of years ago. Yes, this is creepy.

Exploiting kids is never a good idea, no matter how talented they may be, especially not in the name of religion. On Happy Birthday Jesus Little Cindy is not even singing but basically just reciting a prayer in a very cute southern voice:

“Happy Birthday, Jesus!, Momma said that you was near,

And that you had a birthday, This time every year.

She told me how you listen to, Every word we say,

And that you hear us calling, In the night … or in the day.

She ’splained how bad they hurt you, those awful naughty men,
But said you let them do it, For girls like me … what sin.

I’d let you have my blanket, If I was here back then.

She said that you were watching, Everything we do …
Her, and daddy and Granny, And our new baby, too.

She said about the manger, they took and put you in,

And that they didn’t have to have any wealth, Or fame.

She told you was so awful good, And then she made me cry …
She said they nailed you to a cross, They wanted you to die.

I like what momma told me, Of how you healed the lame,

and then it made me happy, when she said you came back again

Momma said that Christmas is what we celebrate
Because on that day you was born.
So I hope I’m not too late, To wish you a Happy Birthday,
Dear Jesus, I”ll be true, cuz momma said if I was good
you’d let me live with you.

She said that you forgave them, cuz you was dying for our sin”

Anyway, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone.

Cop 15 Negotiations Strained, but Ongoing

Against the background of the Chinese refusal to allow monitoring of green house emissions and insistence that the 1992 treaty be honored in which they are to receive assistance toward the reduction of such emissions, the US Agenda was that of “pragmatism”.  Meanwhile smaller nations, notably from Africa, walked out briefly in protest on Monday over proposed assistance.

Through the week concerns continued that progress of the overall climate negotiations regarding technical, financial and emotional issues, for an interim agreement, was too slow and would leave too much unsettled when world leaders sit down to negociate a binding global accord next year.

SOS Hillary Clinton was scheduled to attend today’s conference and leaders events in advance of the President’s arrival on the 18th.

Then today, Japan Times reported the following:

Gridlock threatens to doom COP15

By ERIC JOHNSTON and SETSUKO KAMIYA

Staff writers

[COPENHAGEN — U.N. negotiators at the COP15 conference worked through the night Tuesday, increasingly desperate to reach agreement before more than 120 world leaders gather Thursday night and Friday and following an official warning that the stalemated negotiations could doom the conference….

…One of the main sticking points on financing is which developing countries should receive financial assistance. U.S. officials have stressed they would refuse to provide China with funds. On Tuesday, China said the world's poorest and most vulnerable should be prioritized, a sign Beijing may agree to U.S. demands that funding target small island states in the Pacific or African nations threatened by global warming, rather than large, industrialized developing countries such as itself…]

http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/nn20091217a1.html

Neither China nor the US has yet signed the Kyoto Protocol as regarding green house gas emission.  This is a continuing major issue for many signatory countries. Most would prefer to keep the Kyoto Protocol, however, there is negotiation ongoing to develop a second legally binding protocol that the US might sign.

Netanyahu must make a decision to strike or not to strike

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/middle_east/article6955194.ece

The moment is fast approaching when Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, may have to make the most difficult decision of his career — whether to launch a military strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities and risk triggering a conflagration that could spread across the Middle East.

Israeli experts believe the point of no return may be only six months away when Iran’s nuclear programme will have — if it has not already — metastasised into a multitude of smaller, difficult-to-trace facilities in deserts and mountains, while its main reactor at Bushehr will have come online and bombing it would send a radioactive cloud over the Gulf nations.

Mr Netanyahu has consistently called Iran the most serious threat that Israel faces. Its President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has called for Israel to be obliterated, and his Revolutionary Guards supply training, money and weapons to both Hezbollah in Lebanon, on Israel’s northern border, and to Hamas in the Gaza Strip, whose missiles are believed to be capable of reaching Tel Aviv.

In the run-up to his election this year, Mr Netanyahu promised that “under my Government, Iran will not be allowed to go nuclear”. Yet Mr Ahmadinejad has promised to produce 20 per cent enriched uranium: a big step towards weapons-grade fuel.

With the Iranian threat at the front of his strategic thinking, Mr Netanyahu has surrounded himself with old comrades from Israel’s most prestigious military unit, the Sayeret Matkal, or General Staff Reconnaissance. Mr Netanyahu served in the elite unit in the 1970s under Ehud Barak, who went on to become Israel’s most decorated soldier and later Prime Minister in his own right.

When Mr Netanyahu came to power, he made great efforts to recruit his former commander as Defence Minister. Mr Barak serves with another former leader of the unit, the Deputy Prime Minister, Moshe “Bogie” Yaalon.

The Israeli Prime Minister has hard-wired his core Cabinet with so much military experience for a good reason. Striking Iran’s nuclear facilities will be a huge military and political gamble. Although Russia has delayed supplying Iran with S300 anti-aircraft missiles, which could weaken any Israeli attack, the air force would have to mount one of its largest long-range attacks to have a chance of disabling Iran’s nuclear installations.

Earlier this year a report by Anthony Cordesman of the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, warned that “a military strike by Israel against Iranian nuclear facilities is possible . . . (but) would be complex and high-risk and would lack any assurances that the overall mission will have a high success rate”.

At roughly the same time, Leon Panetta, the head of the CIA, went on a covert visit to Israel to seek assurances that the new Government would not surprise the Obama Administration with a sudden unilateral attack.

In 2007, in what is often seen as a trial run for an attack on Iran, an Israeli squadron flew undetected through Turkish airspace and over Syria’s unprotected border to destroy what was thought to be a nuclear facility under construction with Iranian and North Korean support.

In June 2008, the air force staged exercises over the Mediterranean, with dozens of fighters, bombers and refuelling tankers flying roughly the same distance as between Israel and Iran. Earlier this year, Israeli jets again carried out a long-range bombing mission, hitting trucks in Sudan that were believed to be bringing Iranian weapons to Hamas via Egypt.

In the immediate term, the threat of a strike has receded. Israel is satisfied that Iran’s hostile stance towards the international community has increased the chances of serious, crippling sanctions. Officials noted that for the first time Russia seemed to be serious about isolating Tehran.

But that international front could easily crack, and then Mr Netanyahu would be faced with the decision on whether to order his bombers into action. Iran has already threatened to bomb Israel’s cities with its long-range missiles should its nuclear facilities come under attack, but that is only one of its many options.

It could also, in stages, order Hezbollah to launch rockets across the northern border. The attack could come in conjunction with a Hamas assault from the Gaza Strip.

Alternatively both sides may choose to do nothing. Some analysts believe that Israel might tolerate Iran as a “threshold nuclear state”, capable of building a bomb but not testing it.

Iran could opt for the path chosen by Syria in 2007, if Israel strikes at isolated facilities miles from an urban areas, where the only casualties would be technicians and guards. After a similar strike against Syria, neither side admitted what had happened, thereby avoiding a war and saving face.

last december israel was fighting..will they be this christmas?..you just know israel wont sit and watch..they will act at some stage..and it maybe sooner rather than later..

Dollar Rises on Recovery Signs as Greek Government Bonds Slide

The dollar rose to the highest level in more than two months against the euro on speculation the US economic recovery will prompt the Federal Reserve to start reducing stimulus measures. Greek bonds fell for a second day.

The dollar strengthened against 15 of the 16 most-traded currencies tracked by Bloomberg at 12:12 pm in London (in Taiwan 20:12), advancing 0.8 percent compared with the euro.

While none of the 97 economists surveyed by Bloomberg predicts the Fed will begin raising interest rates at meetings today and tomorrow, investors anticipate the central bank will soon begin to drain some of the $12 trillion it has pumped into the economy.

Signs of recovery from the first global recession since World War II are increasing, and a Fed report today may show industrial production rose 0.5 percent last month, according to a separate survey.

The euro dropped to $1.4526 at 21:45 (GMT+8  ).

Good Riddance to Bad Rubbish

Khol aankh, zameen daikh, falak daikh, fiza daikh,
Mashriq say ubhartay huway sooraj ko zara daikh!

With the imminent departure of the civilian dictator, Prime Minister Gilani’s new government can rid itself of the trash like Rehman Malik and Mr. Kaira and the other 58 seats of incompetence that adorn the president’s cabinet. Pakistanis look at the horizon and see a new dawn–when the scions of corruption will be in jail and daughters of Pakistan being tried in New York will be free, a day when traitors will be behind bars and patriots will be become ambassadors; a day when the ISI will be able to arrest Blackwater–not the other way round; a day when the US Ambassador will be a diplomat not a viceroy; a day when the chief US diplomat cannot say this about the Pakistani executive “he does what we want”; a day when the curse of foreign intervention will be buried deep into the Pakistani Sea (from Arabian Sea).

Pakistan Manzil Nahin–Nishaan e Manzil hai

Pakistan’s Supreme Court began hearing petitions Monday in a case against President Asif Ali Zardari and key allies, including Interior Minister Rehman Malik and Defense Minister Ahmed Mukhtar. After expiration of the amnesty protecting him, the unpopular leader may face corruption charges that could force him to surrender key presidential powers or even to step down.

Anytime there is a shift of power in Pakistan, it is widely believed that the U.S. is behind the scenes, which in fact, has been quite true in the past, but this time the situation is different. Zardari is likely to emerge as a mere ceremonial president, like the one in India. This current transition is due to gradually increasing pressure from the people of Pakistan themselves and not as a result of overseas Machiavellian machinations.

Since Zardari was sworn in as president of Pakistan on September 9, 2008, he did everything in his power to comply with American demands in order to gain U.S. support. Under his administration, Pakistan launched a war to crush militants by force, sending the army to South Waziristan to fight tribal militants — ignoring Pakistan’s constitution that bars any kind of military incursion in the semiautonomous region. He also gave covert approval for U.S. drone attacks in the northwest region bordering Afghanistan, where U.S. and NATO forces continue to fight a bloody war against Taliban insurgents.

The people of Pakistan have suffered enormously in the backlash from all this, as Taliban militants unleashed their suicide bombers upon them (although many of the terrorist attacks appear to be the handiwork of certain countries’ intelligence agencies, who are probably exploiting the chaotic situation). Nowadays, many of the country’s major cities present scenes of war-torn devastation, particularly the army stronghold of Rawalpindi and the capital of the Northwest Frontier Province Peshawar.

So, the masses, fed up with daily terrorist attacks, fed up with corrupt and unscrupulous politicians, bureaucrats, and technocrats who gave them nothing but insecurity, lawlessness, corruption, unemployment, food inflation and perpetual power failures, participated heavily in the campaign to reinstate Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry, who was dismissed by former military ruler Pervez Musharraf when the independent-minded judge refused to submit to the dictator’s twisted logic.

With Justice Chaudhry back on the bench, Pakistan’s judiciary regained the independence to challenge the chronic corruption and misrule, and nation’s vibrant electronic and print media played its key role to build public opinion against the crooked officials.

The amnesty-beneficiaries’ list includes more than 8,000 politicians, civil and military bureaucrats. Civil rights activists argue that it was unjust to help so many people escape prosecution for alleged wrongdoing.

Zardari, who has denied the massive corruption charges against him, enjoys general immunity from prosecution as president, but the Supreme Court could choose to challenge his eligibility for the post if the amnesty is declared illegal.

The court session came two weeks after the expiration of the amnesty, which had been granted in a U.S.-backed deal by Musharraf to allow Zardari’s late wife, former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, to return from exile in 2007 and run for office secure in the knowledge she would not be dogged by corruption allegations that had forced her from office twice in the 1990s.

So, in order to save himself, his ministers and his friends from the tightening noose, Zardari is desperately trying to hammer out a deal with the estranged opposition politicians. He is ready to transfer most of the sweeping presidential powers he inherited from Musharraf to the prime minister and assume a ceremonial role, but some are still calling for his scalp.

Pakistan’s 1973 constitution envisioned a parliamentary style of government, in which a popularly elected prime minister is the chief executive and the president is a ceremonial head of state. However, former President Musharraf amassed power for himself in order to stay in charge.

If Zardari and his crooked ministers would resign due to the mounting pressure, there would be a better chance that under the sensible leadership of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, Pakistan could push the national re-set button. This could restore security, establish law and order, revitalize the economy, secure country’s energy needs, create job opportunities for young men so they would not drift toward militancy, improve the dilapidated educational system and lower the food inflation that has made life so miserable for the lower middle class.

Pakistan is a country where things change fast these days. In the coming days, the only government officials who will survive will be those who are serving the people. The rest will fall one by one by the efforts of the diligent media and the independent judiciary. Imran says he got positive response from Taliban-->We support this initiative from Imran Khan and demand the government and urge the people to honestly support it.

At last someone from politicians finally volunteered for the cause of peace in Pakistan. We cannot expect any good from parliamentarians, government, army or agencies to work for the cause of peace because it will not serve their greed and lust for power.

People like Imran Khan , other leaders from PTI and Jamat e Islami,Ulemas who are trusted by tribesmen and other religious and political figures need to make a joint effort for this cause and  this should be backed by the trust of Pakistani people and government.

Army and agencies shouldn’t try to deceive the people this time as they have already created a huge mess just for dollars and to serve their imperialist masters.

We support this initiative from Imran Khan and demand the government and urge the people to honestly support it.

We need to get out of this war against humanity and peace, we are already too late and cannot afford more damage.

We oppose the killings of innocent people in army actions, suicide bombings or in any other way.

Imran says he got positive response from Taliban

The News

Source: http://www.thenews.com.pk/daily_detail.asp?id=212671

By Ansar Abbasi

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf chief Imran Khan, who on Wednesday offered his services and even showed the willingness to go to the tribal areas to get the mounting terrorism issue resolved through political dialogue, got encouraging response from the Taliban side. His appeal, however, seems to have fallen on the governmentís deaf ears.

The cricket hero-turned-social worker, Imran Khan, told The News on Thursday that after his Wednesday’s press conference, he was contacted by some important Taliban groups, who posed their full confidence in him for political solution of the problem. Khan said that no one from the government side contacted him though.

Imran Khan on Wednesday volunteered to mediate between the government and the Taliban leadership to bring peace, claiming that the menace of terrorism was bound to grow because of the military operation in South Waziristan and in the absence of a political solution.

In his press conference, he had said that if the government gave him the mandate, he was willing to travel to the tribal areas and elsewhere to negotiate peace. His only pre-condition to mediation between the two sides was that the government would not let the US-pressure to ruin his peace efforts like the past.

While some people believe the government has no political strategy to address the issue and is entirely dependent on the military operation that has allegedly aggravated the problem, Imran has taken a bold step amidst great chances that he would be dubbed pro-Taliban by confused Pakistanis and arrogant foreigners.

Imran Khan got an encouraging reaction from some Taliban leaders. Khan said that he was now even considering convening an all parties conference (APC) on the issue. Jamaat-e-Islami and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (Fazlur Rehman Group) are also opposed to the military operation and seek a political solution to the problem by revisiting Pakistanís policy on the US war on terror, formulating an independent foreign policy and bringing an immediate halt to the military operation in the tribal areas, particularly South Waziristan.

Although, Maulana Fazlur Rehman is not appearing in the media these days, Jamaat-e-Islami chief Professor Munawar Hasan has become vocal in his opposition to the military operation. Interestingly, the PML-N is also not supportive of the present military operation but it lacks the guts to public its demand a political solution to terrorism. However, the party is not making its views public amid reports that it does not want to irritate Washington that is today quite pleased with the party and its top leadership.

In this situation, Imran Khanís daring initiative to do what others are shy to do, is expected to bring pressure on all other pro-dialogue parties, including the PML-N, the JI and the JUI(F) to sit together and chalk out a strategy where the government could be pressurised to save its innocents, whether in the tribal areas or in settled areas of Pakistan from being killed.

Homecoming V.2

Have been humming this song for quite some time and for all the good/bad Chi-city has done to me, a humble bow! :)

Yeah.
And you say Chi city,
Chi city, Chi city……
I’m coming home again.
Do you think about me now and then?
Do you think about me now and then?
Cause I’m coming home again
Coming home again.

[Verse 1 - Kanye West]
I met this girl when I was three years old
And what I loved most she had so much soul
She said, excuse me little homie, I know you don’t know me- but,
My name is Wendy and, I like to blow trees and,
From that point I never blow her off,
Niggas come from outta town I like to show her off,
They like to act tough, she like to tell em off,
And make em straighten up there act, cause she know they soft
And when I grew up she showed me how to go downtown
And at nighttime my face lit up so astounding
And I told her in my heart is where she always be
She never mess with entertainers cause they always leave
She said it felt like they walked and drove on me
Knew I was gang affiliated got on TV and told on me
I guess it’s why last winter she got so cold on me
She said, Ye keep making that, keep making that platinum and gold for me

[Chorus - Chris Martin]
Do you think about me now and then?
Do you think about me now and then?
Cause I’m coming home again
Coming home again
Do you think about me now and then?
Do you think about me now and then?
Oh, now I’m coming home again

Maybe we can start again

[Verse 2 - Kanye West]
But if you really care for her, then you wouldn’t n-never hit the airport,
To follow your dream, sometimes I still talk to her, but when I talk to her
It always seems like she talking ’bout me,
She said you left your kids and they just like you
They wanna rap and make soul beats just like you,
But they just not you and I just got through
Talking bout what niggas trying to do, just not new
Now everybody got the game figured out all wrong
I guess you never know what you got till its gone
I guess this is why I’m here and I cant come back home
And guess when I heard that when I was back home
Every interview I’m representing you making you proud
Reach for the stars so if you fall you land on a cloud
Jump in the crowd, spark your lighters, wave em around,
And if you don’t know by now, I’m talking about Chi Town,

[Chorus - Chris Martin]
Do you think about me now and then?
Do you think about me now and then?
Cause I’m coming home again
Coming home again
Maybe, do you remember when fireworks at lake Michigan
Oh, now I’m coming home again
Coming home again
Maybe, do you remember when fireworks at lake Michigan
Oh, now I’m coming home again
Maybe we can start again

Loyee oyeee oh, loyee oyeee oh
Coming home again

Loyee oyeee oh, loyee oyeee oh
Coming home again

Maybe we can start again

Treason at Copenhagen

http://www.examiner.com/x-25570-Grand-Rapids-Conservative-Examiner~y2009m12d8-Treason-at-Copenhagen

When the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) made the announcement this week that it has declared carbon dioxide (CO2) and five other gases as “a danger to human health,” it fired the most lethal salvo yet into what little sovereignty remains of our constitutional republic. With her so-called “endangerment finding” declaration, EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson made clear that this declaration will lead to new regulations under the Clean Air Act to govern emission standards for cars, power plants, crude-oil refineries, chemical plants and all other “environmental suspects” in the economic engine that drives the U.S. economy.  It appears that the act of exhaling when breathing will now become regulated.

In making this announcement on the same day in which the United Nations climate change conference began in Copenhagen, Denmark, Jackson was making it clear that when Obama attends the last day of the conference, he will be able to unilaterally commit the United States to a binding, international treaty that will begin the process of ceding our national sovereignty to a body of UN bureaucrats.  It is designed to make Obama look like “the savior” since the coming EPA regulations will practically force the US into signing a “Cap-and-Trade” bill to lower its carbon footprint to such a low target that will make U.S. economic growth virtually unsustainable.

In light of the recent ClimateGate revelations, in which some 3,500 emails from the Climate Change Unit (CCU) at Britain’s University of East Anglia revealed the extent to which man-made global warming backers went to illegally skew real climate data in order to cover and hide the truth, the EPA should not be making this announcement, let alone hinting at further regulation. Because “man-made” climate change is not real, and every delegate at the UN conference knows it, the EPA’s actions are a means to hurry a final agreement before the masses really discover just how they have been lied to about the “urgency” of “global warming.”

It is an absolute scandal that the head of the UN panel of climate scientists have decided to attack the entire ClimateGate affair as nothing more than a way to undermine the credibility of the organization. Despite the fact that they were caught red-handed from the content in these emails, these hypocrites choose instead to lash out at those who exposed the fraud rather than try to come clean on what really is going on. The emails are directly from “respected” climate scientists, who, in their own words, exchanged messages that say real climate temperatures have not really risen to dangerous levels. Rather than try to find out why this is the case, they decided to engineer methods to keep all opposing viewpoints from being argued while covering real data with false data to match their own desired  “results.”

The lack of any acknowledgement by the delegates at Copenhagen, and by our own President and the members of his radical leftist administration have been deafening.  If this is the so-called “science” on which Obama happily bases his actions in leading our national sovereignty to slaughter in a binding treaty, without question and without the support of Congress, it is akin to an act of treason against our constitutional republic.

The Copenhagen conference is not about “man-made global warming,” it is about setting up an international, global supervisory body under UN auspices, in order to facilitate the transfer of national wealth and sovereignty from wealthy nations to the Third World. It is not about trying to save the planet, rather it is a means of controlling individual freedoms and getting your income in a global tax in order to transfer your income to bring about a lower standard of living in the developed world to match that of poor and corrupt nations.  In reality, this is about punishing success and free enterprise, especially the United States.

Under the Treaty Clause in Article II, Section 2, Clause 2 of the United States Constitution, the President of the United States is only empowered to make treaties with other nations only after obtaining the consent of a two-thirds supermajority of the United States Senate. This has not yet happened, nor will it before Obama goes to Copenhagen with the EPA declaration. Yet the Obama administration has indicated that the President will sign a binding treaty which will force the U.S. to commit to a twenty percent reduction in carbon emissions by 2020. Of course, the socialist European climate scammers are excited by Obama’s arrival in Copenhagen armed with bureaucratic, top-down command-style regulation rather than a legitimate mandate based on Congressional legislation. After all, they are unelected power-hungry bureaucrats who are excited to see this president doing everything in his power to literally destroy the liberty, sovereignty and power of the United States from within.

TreasonDictionary.com, is 1. The offense of acting to overthrow one’s government or to harm or kill its sovereign. 2. A violation of allegiance to one’s sovereign or to one’s state. 3. The betrayal of a trust or confidence; breach of faith; treachery., as defined at   If Obama attempts to surrender our national sovereignty to an unelected bureaucracy at Copenhagen, which is openly known to be based on junk science which is founded on fraudulent data, he knows that he will undermine our economic health, military strength and standard of living, while forcing us to pay taxes to an unelected, global body where we are not represented. He knows he will be bypassing the required legislative process as defined in the U.S. Constitution, therefore trampling our guaranteed liberties and rights as citizens of the United States and protected by the U.S. Constitution. Based on the definitions as stated, I believe Obama will meet most of the definitions for treason.   If we are going to continue standing idly by while Obama’s radical left leads us down the path of intentional destruction, and we do not start peacefully speaking up to the current Administration’s total disregard for the laws set in our Constitution, then we will not survive as an independent nation much longer.   The coming House cleaning in November 2010 will go a long way toward restoring a real check on Obama’s current unbridled power.   http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/geraldwarner/100019206/climategate-barack-obamas-rule-by-epa-decree-is-a-coup-detat-against-congress-made-in-britain/   Climategate: Barack Obama’s rule by EPA decree is a coup d’etat against Congress, made in Britain.

Who needs tanks on the lawn when you have the Environmental Protection Agency? Barack Obama’s use of the EPA to pressurise the Senate to pass his climate change Nuremberg Decrees shows his dictatorial mentality. He wants to override Congress, which is hostile to his climate gobbledegook because it is representative of the American electorate, and sideline the nation’s elected Senators by ruling by decree, courtesy of the EPA. This is a coup d’état.

And what is the justification for this undemocratic action? The allegedly imminent threat from “Anthropogenic Global Warming”. There is always a supposed threat, when tyrants take the stage. The President of the United States has just reduced his moral authority to the level of any Third World dictator heading a “Government of National Emergency”. Fortunately, the world’s leading democracy, which he is trying to subvert, has guarantees of liberty so deeply embedded in its Constitution that US citizens are well placed to fight back.

In the first place, regulation can be challenged in a way that laws cannot. So the EPA’s proposed ruling on so-called “Greenhouse Gases” can be opposed extensively with litigation, to the point that the ruling might not yet be in force when Obama demits office. In the second place, the EPA is funded by Congress. So, if the Agency is being used to bypass or neuter Congress, why should legislators not play hardball and retaliate by cutting off its funding? The EPA may look formidable, but its situation is rather as if Rommel were buying the fuel for his tanks from the Allies.

But what is of compelling interest on this side of the pond is the way in which the bullets to shoot down American democracy were made in Britain. The trail is not hard to follow. When the EPA published its “Endangerment Finding” on greenhouse gases and proposed rule, back in April, almost every paragraph of the text (Federal Register, April 24, 2009, pp 18886-18910) cited as authority the IPCC’s 2007 Report, which the Agency acknowledges it “relies on most heavily”. And whence came the main input on climate change to that report?

Yes, that’s right! You’ve got it: from Phil Jones, Michael Mann and the rest of the lads at the CRU, East Anglia. From the innovative, creative “scientists” who wanted to “beat the crap” out of a climate change sceptic; who “just completed Mike’s Nature trick”; who “can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t”; who deleted e-mails in the interests of science; who tried to prevent publication of dissenters’ views; who coined the historic phrase “hide the decline”.

Those jokers are the main authority for the extravagant claims in the IPCC report and, by extension, for the EPA’s “Endangerment Finding”. That is the authority that is being invoked to overturn the principles of 1776 in the United States. The Protocols of the Elders of Norwich are the justification for EPA tyranny. It is with that weighty evidence at his back that Barack Obama is going to Copenhagen to sell out American taxpayers to Third World subsidy junkies, profiteering “green” corporations and the ever entrepreneurial Al Gore. This is the steal of the millennium: forget the Great Train Robbery and the Brinks Mat caper – these hoodlums are targeting $45 trillion.

Obama hates America and, increasingly, that sentiment is being reciprocated. This is a socialist, World Government putsch. Have the American people the resolution to resist it? We shall soon know.

Climate treaty endangers USA

Hanging over our freedom and sovereignty is a document called the“United Nations Climate ChangeTreaty.”

So what, you may say?

Here’s what. The plan is to have signatories from all countries –Third World, radical leftist nations, and us. Unless we forbid President Obama to sign up America, we’ll be caught in this awful net.

Here’s what it says: 1. Create a world government with power over every nation signing; 2.Transfer wealth from the West to theThird World; 3. Enforce these measures.

Now let’s explore what these measures mean to us.

The first one creates a socialist world government, something our president appears to advocate. The wording provides the U.N. with power over our country, over our Constitution.

Yes, this world government will have power over our government, imposing its will on our energy use, resources and jobs.

Can you live with that?

The second will force American taxpayers to support and subsidizeThird World nations – unstable countries, with no economies nor the capacity to rule themselves without dictators.

In effect, this is redistribution of wealth, reducing the U.S. to Third World status and impoverishing our citizens. If you think the economy and unemployment are bad now, just wait until this treaty goes into effect – IF we allow our president to sign it!

The third goal of the treaty is the most ominous. Stated in the document is the proviso that once a nation has signed, it may not cancel its membership without the approval of all the other member nations. Let that sink in. No future president, no elected Congress or Senate can vote to take us out of the agreement. And why would they agree to let us out – we will be the biggest cash cow they’ve ever had!

Recently, theTimes printed an ominous article, quoting agencies of the U.N. and other governmental entities, including alarming statistics about the impending doom of the alleged global warming. Coincidentally, all these groups are dedicated to a one-world government controlling all energy and economies.

———-

the EPA has circumvented congress by doing this..tricky but blatant..declaring carbon dioxide hazardous wtf..plants dont grow without it..we dont live without it..and we send it out into the atmosphere when we breathe..as ian plimer says..maybe we better save the planet and just die..eh? :)

more lies…

JAY-Z THROWS STAR-STUDDED 40TH BIRTHDAY BASH

He’s never been one to hid his light under a bushel – but R&B king Jay-Z has pulled out all the stops to host a bling birthday party to remember.The 40 year-old celebrated by chartering two private jets to fly friends from New York to theDominican Republic party location.

And once there, Kanye West,Mary J Blige, Alicia Keys, P Diddy, Kate Hudson, Ne-Yo,M.I.A., Oprah Winfrey and Lil Wayne were treated to a gangster movie-themed night to remember.Meanwhile Gwyneth Paltrow and Coldplay’s Chris Martin sent video congratulations – but just one other invited guest, Tiger Woods, wasmissing from the crowd.

The whole event was based on the Al Pacino movie Scarface, with the rapper’s wife, Beyonce, and his mum, Gloria, proudly named as guests of honour. The favoured few tucked into a lavish dinner featuring canapés with caviar, all washed down with Dom Perignon champagne.

Kanye West and P Diddy both sang for their supper before Jay-Z and Alicia Keys added an impromptu version of Empire State of Mind. The night ended with fireworks and a 40s-style synchronised swimming display.

Sadly we can’t show you any photos of the shindig. Even the most famous faces present had to leave their mobile phones at the door to avoid anyone smuggling photos out.

This is it

The transition from New Zealand to the US was quite dramatic. I entered a completely different world. The one common factor is the English language, but that’s about it. Even then I had to realize that the “no worries, mate” did not get me very far in the US. It took me a couple of days to adjust and meanwhile people probably thought I came from a strange planet. The other big change was that we were back in the Northern hemisphere where the sunset is at around 5pm at this time of the year.

My arrival in Los Angeles was off to a bad start anyway. After a 14 hour flight we touched down at around 6am and as I walked off the plane it felt like sleepwalking. So I walk up to the immigration officer who engages me in the usual chitchat.

Q: What do you do for a living?

A: I am unemployed

Q: How long have you been unemployed?

A: For about 9 months

Q: How long will you stay in the US?

A: About 6 days

Q: Can I see your ticket?

A: Sure!

The officer kept starring at my ticket and by then it dawned on me that I had not yet changed my flights (my ticket actually said I was staying in the US for 6 weeks…) and that the other answers I had given were probably not very smart. Well, turns out the officer was thinking along the same lines and so I was handed over to another officer who took me to a special admittance screening. Thank God it was early in the morning and no one else was there, otherwise I could have spent hours and hours waiting…

Anyway, it was all smooth sailing from there… I had been to Los Angeles a couple of time on business but the place is so big I always found it tough to get my arms around it. Luckily, this time I was staying with my cousin Nathalie and her friend Sergio. Both of them are originally from Switzerland but moved to LA to pursue their careers in the music industry. They showed me around the city and it was great to see it from an insiders point of view.  But it was equally fascinating to learn more about the music business (a completely new territory for me) and meet some of their friends (of course also from the music business). So many of these young artists are living in hope of the big breakthrough and their life is a rollercoaster ride while they are trying to find the right contacts that will help them getting to the top. So networking is everything (just like in finance) and it was obvious that the US entertainment industry is in a completely different league (just like in finance). Also found it interesting to learn that the top stars earn relatively little with their music. These days its all about building a big brand name and getting as much juice as possible from that…

I had not seen my cousin Nathalie in about 10 years so we had lots of things to catch up on and lots of US experiences to share. She had arrived in LA about five years ago to live her dream (another thing we have in common!) and I was really impressed how much energy she has and much progress she has made towards achieving her goal of being an internationally known singer. In fact, she is about to make a major breakthrough and I really hope it works out this time. Go for it girl!!!

My impression of Los Angeles was much better than expected. There are a couple of really nice corners (if you know where to find them) and the pace of life is much slower than in New York.  Some areas like Downtown have received dramatic facelifts with impressive results. Ten years ago it was the most likely place to get killed and now the streets are buzzing with life day and night. The one big negative factor in LA though is traffic. Its hard to understand how people cope with hours and hours of commute every day and much of it being stuck in traffic jams (despite 12 lane highways!). I think this should be a big lesson for the rest of the world. Building more roads is not a solution as it simply increases traffic!

After catching up with Caroline, my other cousin who lives in LA (sorry we did not have more time) and a nice farewell dinner with Nathalie and Sergio I was hopping on a plane to New York. Arriving in New York always feels like coming home (after all I was living there for almost 4 years). I love the taxi ride from JFK airport to Manhattan via the Triborough Bridge as you can see the impressive skyline from far away. It keeps getting bigger as you approach Manhattan until you suddenly find yourself in the midst of the concrete jungle. Having lived in the Big Apple before there is no need to do all the sightseeing. It is rather all about catching up with old friends (even one from Singapore that I was bumping into accidentally), going to a few specific places, having a run in central park (its workout and people watching in one!) and maybe seeing a show or two. But things in New York change quickly so I was utterly disappointed to find all the CD shops I knew (who is buying CDs these days anyway?) and some of my favorite restaurants were closed down. But then again, new things still keep popping up and hence it was a nice surprise to find a brandnew Apple store. New York seems surprisingly resilient to the economic and real estate downturns (in contrast to LA where you could see and feel the impact) but to be honest a lot of the spending in the shops seems to be by tourists. At the current exchange rates shopping in the US is cheap as chips! But while the tourists shop till they drop, modesty seems to be the name of the (new) game for many of the locals. As my friend Nick pointed out, the savings rate in the US has gone from -2% to +5% despite a doubling in unemployment numbers.

After New York it was back to Switzerland and I got back just in time for the first decent snow fall. Sitting in the plane it slowly dawned on me that I was being transported back to the real world after travelling for 12 months. I feel blessed that I was able to see so many beautiful places and meet so many wonderful people. My batteries are fully charged and I am ready for the new challenges that lie ahead.

Living my dream was one of the best things I ever did! I hope my travel stories have inspired you to do the same.

Science and world diplomacy

Comment on news article by Koenig R, “US takes steps to use science to improve ties to Muslim world”, 2009, Science, Vol 326, 13 Nov, p920-921.

An interesting policy step by the USA was announced last month with the naming three prominent scientists as special envoys to assess and develop scientific partnerships with Muslim-majority countries. These scientists include Egyptian-born chemistry Nobel Prize winner Ahmed H. Zewail, Algerian-born former director of the NIH Elias Zerhouni, and former president of the US National Academy of Sciences and current editor-in-chief of the journal Science Bruce Alberts. This policy announcement is seen as an effort to increase the role of science in diplomacy.

I think this is a step in the right direction to improve global relationships. If you think about the “languages” that are universally understood and common to all of humanity, it could possibly come down to two “languages” – that of music and science (we could also include sport). All beings living on this Earth live within and obey the laws of science no matter what their ethnicity, cultural beliefs, language spoken, or geographic location. If we look at universities in most of the Western world we see science and technology faculties with staff members from all over the world be they Oriental, Indian, Latino, European, African, etc. Scientific collaboration between academics and researchers all over the world already happens without political mandate, such is the nature and workings of the scientific community. I think it is positive that the US is seriously looking at improving its relationship with Muslim-majority countries through the use of scientific collaborations. With scientific collaboration between any cultures maybe they can work together to solve common scientific, technological, humanitarian, and health problems and forget about the relatively small differences between them.

It’s also interesting that there is a statement by Elias Zerhouni about the lack of science trained politicians and diplomats. I’ve always thought that if a society was to advance itself in terms of providing good health services, better living standards, and working public infrastructure there should be scientists and engineers in positions of decision-making in every level of government, including the top echelons of government, who understand the problem-solving process, have design thinking, have vision and creativity, and understand the practicalities of tackling the tough issues facing our natural world (e.g. alternative energy, urban overcrowding, disease spread). However, if only it could be so easy to get rid of all the personal agendas, power-grabbing, short-sightedness, and politicking in government and international relations, and focus on the real problems facing all peoples in all cultures and societies, then that would be a great dream becoming reality. I follow with interest to see if this step towards more scientific collaborations can help bring better cooperation and understanding between the USA and other countries.

HSBC Software Bug Shows Confidential Chap.13 Info

A deficiency in the software used by HSBC has led to a data breach.  Redacted sensitive information on saved imaged documents was visible due to a software bug.  It has affected the bank’s customers who were going through Chapter 13 bankruptcy proceedings.

It has affected files between May 1, 2007 and Oct. 17, 2008–over one year!  HSBC learned of the problem on July 9, 2009.

Personal H1N1 Vaccination Profile? SCAM!

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has issued a notice warning people that e-mails referring to a state vaccination program are false.  These are phishing attempts, and they are trying to get your personal data by setting up a “personal H1N1 vaccination profile.”  From the CDC:

The messages request that users must create a personal H1N1 (swine flu) Vaccination Profile on the cdc.gov website. The message then states that anyone that has reached the age of 18 has to have his/her personal Vaccination Profile on the cdc.gov site.

The CDC has NOT implemented a state vaccination program requiring registration on www.cdc.gov. Users that click on the email are at risk of having malicious code installed on their system. CDC reminds users to take the following steps to reduce the risk of being a victim of a phishing attack:

  • Do not follow unsolicited links and do not open or respond to unsolicited email messages.
  • Use caution when visiting un-trusted websites.
  • Use caution when entering personal information online.

The page seems to be on a rolling basis, so if other news comes up, the above passage will be pushed down (use Ctrl+F to do a search, I guess).

White House aides insisted F-22 be removed from Obama speech venue

http://www.freerepublic.com/%5ehttp:/thecable.foreignpolicy.com/pos…

When President Obama spoke to troops at Alaska’s Elmendorf Air Force Base last month, the unit there parked a shiny new F-22 fighter plane in the hanger. But according to multiple sources, White House aides demanded the plane be changed to an older F-15 fighter because they didn’t want Obama speaking in front of the F-22, a controversial program he fought hard to end.

“White House aides actually made them remove the F-22-said they would not allow POTUS to be pictured with the F-22 in any way, shape, or form,” one source close to the unit relayed.
Stephen Lee, a public affairs officer at Elmendorf, confirmed to The Cable that the F-22 was parked in the hanger and then was replaced by an F-15 at the White House’s behest.

The airmen there took offense to the Obama aides’ demand, sources told The Cable, seeing it as a slight to the folks who are operating the F-22 proudly every day. They also expressed bewilderment that the White House staff would even care so much as to make an issue out of the fact that the F-22 was placed in the hanger with the president.

A White House official, commenting on background basis, told The Cable that yes, there were discussions about which plane or planes would be in the hanger, but that they were not meant as an insult to the pilots and other personnel who work on the F-22. The official couldn’t elaborate on why the White House aides felt it necessary to get involved in the matter in the first place.

The official pointed to Obama’s speech to the troops that day, where he praised both the 90th Fighter Squadron, known as the “Dicemen,” and the 525th Fighter Squadron, the “Bulldogs,” both of which operate the F-22.

Even so, the Air Force personnel thought it odd the White House wanted to display the older plane rather than the more advanced plane that, in the eyes of its supporters, represents the latest and greatest in American aviation.

The Obama administration fought hard and successfully to cut off production of the F-22 at 187 planes, a number Defense Secretary Robert Gates endorsed but that was hundreds less than originally planned and about half of the 381 planes Air Force leadership lobbied hard for in the years preceding Obama’s inauguration.

“It’s one thing to be against further production; quite another to slight the folks who are flying them in the operational world,” one source said, adding that “the F-15 pictured was put into service roughly around the same period when Obama graduated from college. It’s vintage.”

Obama would have been more comfortable with a Sukhoi Su-35 or the Jian-10 behind him. What nonsense. How did we end up with this poseur to be President?

This character is unfit to be CIC, unfit to be any type of elected official. He is a f%@k&%g disgrace and a joke.  Thanks to RJ over at Paul Revere’s Riders.
