Climate Gate – All the manipulations and lies revealed 21

The Global Warming Hysterics – they are SOOO “scientific” are they not?

“SCIENTISTS at the University of East Anglia (UEA) have admitted throwing away much of the raw temperature data on which their predictions of global warming are based.

It means that other academics are not able to check basic calculations said to show a long-term rise in temperature over the past 150 years.

The UEA’s Climatic Research Unit (CRU) was forced to reveal the loss following requests for the data under Freedom of Information legislation. “

“Climate change sceptics have long been keen to examine exactly how its data were compiled.

That is now impossible. “

Climate change data dumped

Jonathan Leake, Environment Editor

SCIENTISTS at the University of East Anglia (UEA) have admitted throwing away much of the raw temperature data on which their predictions of global warming are based.

It means that other academics are not able to check basic calculations said to show a long-term rise in temperature over the past 150 years.

The UEA’s Climatic Research Unit (CRU) was forced to reveal the loss following requests for the data under Freedom of Information legislation.

The data were gathered from weather stations around the world and then adjusted to take account of variables in the way they were collected. The revised figures were kept, but the originals — stored on paper and magnetic tape — were dumped to save space when the CRU moved to a new building.

The admission follows the leaking of a thousand private emails sent and received by Professor Phil Jones, the CRU’s director. In them he discusses thwarting climate sceptics seeking access to such data.

In a statement on its website, the CRU said: “We do not hold the original raw data but only the value-added (quality controlled and homogenised) data.”

The CRU is the world’s leading centre for reconstructing past climate and temperatures. Climate change sceptics have long been keen to examine exactly how its data were compiled. That is now impossible.

Roger Pielke, professor of environmental studies at Colorado University, discovered data had been lost when he asked for original records. “The CRU is basically saying, ‘Trust us’. So much for settling questions and resolving debates with science,” he said.

Jones was not in charge of the CRU when the data were thrown away in the 1980s, a time when climate change was seen as a less pressing issue. The lost material was used to build the databases that have been his life’s work, showing how the world has warmed by 0.8C over the past 157 years.

He and his colleagues say this temperature rise is “unequivocally” linked to greenhouse gas emissions generated by humans. Their findings are one of the main pieces of evidence used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which says global warming is a threat to humanity.

News Release In The Sunday Times By Jonathan Leake – Climate Change Data Dumped

There is a news release in the Sunday Times by Jonathan Leake titled “Climate change data dumped” [Note: the Roger Pielke referred to in the article is Pielke Jr]. This startling disclosure means that  climate scientists will be unable to assess the mathematical methodology that CRU has used to convert the raw temperature data to the adjusted temperature data that were reported (at least up to the 1980s) in the 2007 IPCC assessment.

The article includes the text

“SCIENTISTS at the University of East Anglia (UEA) have admitted throwing away much of the raw temperature data on which their predictions of global warming are based.

It means that other academics are not able to check basic calculations said to show a long-term rise in temperature over the past 150 years.

The UEA’s Climatic Research Unit (CRU) was forced to reveal the loss following requests for the data under Freedom of Information legislation. “

The data were gathered from weather stations around the world and then adjusted to take account of variables in the way they were collected. The revised figures were kept, but the originals — stored on paper and magnetic tape — were dumped to save space when the CRU moved to a new building.”

As also written in the news article

“In a statement on its website, the CRU said: “We do not hold the original raw data but only the value-added (quality controlled and homogenised) data.”

This is an absurd claim that the new data is “value-added”.  Indeed, we document a number of unresolved issues with the surface temperature data, which CRU now prevents anyone from assessing in our paper

 Pielke Sr., R.A., C. Davey, D. Niyogi, S. Fall, J. Steinweg-Woods, K. Hubbard, X. Lin, M. Cai, Y.-K. Lim, H. Li, J. Nielsen-Gammon, K. Gallo, R. Hale, R. Mahmood, S. Foster, R.T. McNider, and P. Blanken, 2007: Unresolved issues with the assessment of multi-decadal global land surface temperature trends. J. Geophys. Res., 112, D24S08, doi:10.1029/2006JD008229.

The claim in the article that this elimination of the data up to the 1980s, however,  suggests that raw data since that time period is available. This data needs to be independently scrutinized  (i.e. not by GISS or NCDC) and each step of their “quality control” and “homogenization” quantitatively assessed [of course, GISS and NCDC should have the raw data prior to the 1980s].

Sicurezza

Demnaechst tote Tiere + orange Monster online, stay tuned

American Health Care

I had tiny misshap at dinner on Friday. In the new dining hall you can choose from several different pasta dishes in on day, they serve 5-6 differen ones with one being the chefs choice of the day. Yesterday the special was thai linguni with chicken breast and soy sauce. According to the sign there were nothing I couldnt eat in it. They are usually very specific.. And I always avoid the pine pesto. I took one bite to realized that my troath began to itch. Walked back to the Cook and asked if there were nuts in it? No and you asked for nothing on it. I go: are you sure? He says well there is no peanuts, but there is peanuts sauce in it. I replied im not supposed to eat that. Left my plate and began to walk back to my dorm. I could feel how my lips where getting bigger and bigger. Ahh… Got a little panic and called a friend from my com class. That I knew were on campus, had a car and knew that i was allergic. We drove to the hospital. Weird. Took 10 min for registretion then 10 min before first doctor checked up on me. Then after 10 min came the chief and checked up on me and then 10 min after that came the nurse with two shots and two pills. Stayed for about an hour or two. Feeling ok now. Thanks for the assistance!

Ps. Always keep an health insurance card with an American adress with you. They didn’t take either of my European ones (recomended by my Swedish school) so I’m gonna get a bill in the mail.

Irakische Taktik in Afghanistan

American and Afghan officials have begun helping a number of anti-Taliban militias that have independently taken up arms against insurgents in several parts of Afghanistan, prompting hopes of a large-scale tribal rebellion against the Taliban.

The emergence of the militias, which took some leaders in Kabul by surprise, has so encouraged the American and Afghan officials that they are planning to spur the growth of similar armed groups across the Taliban heartland in the southern and eastern parts of the country.

The American and Afghan officials say they are hoping the plan, called the Community Defense Initiative, will bring together thousands of gunmen to protect their neighborhoods from Taliban insurgents. Already there are hundreds of Afghans who are acting on their own against the Taliban, officials say.

“The idea is to get people to take responsibility for their own security,” said a senior American military official in Kabul, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “In many places they are already doing that.”

The growth of the anti-Taliban militias runs the risk that they could turn on one another, or against the Afghan and American governments.

The Americans say they will keep the groups small and will limit the scope of their activities to protecting villages and manning checkpoints.

For now, they are not arming the groups because they already have guns.

The Americans also say they will tie them directly to the Afghan government.

The first phase of the Afghan plan, now being carried out by American Special Forces soldiers, is to set up or expand the militias in areas with a population of about a million people. Special Forces soldiers have been fanning out across the countryside, descending from helicopters into valleys where the residents have taken up arms against the Taliban and offering their help.

“We are trying to reach out to these groups that have organized themselves,” Col. Christopher Kolenda said in Kabul.

Afghan and American officials say they plan to use the militias as tripwires for Taliban incursions, enabling them to call the army or the police if things get out of hand.

The official assistance to the militias so far has been modest, consisting mainly of ammunition and food, officials said. But American and Afghan officials say they are also planning to train the fighters and provide communication equipment.

So far, there appears to be some divergence in the American and Afghan efforts. While American Special Forces units have focused on helping smaller militias, Afghan officials have been channeling assistance to larger armed groups, including those around the northern city of Kunduz. In that city, several armed groups, led by ethnic Uzbek commanders as well as Pashtuns, are confronting the Taliban.

“In Kunduz, after they defeated the Taliban in their villages, they became the power and they took money and taxes from the people,” Mr. Atmar, the interior minister, said. “This is not legal, and this is warlordism.”

American Policies for Asia- Picking up colors.

Now we see USA bowing down and we see this is clear daylight. How US was bowing down in Japan and how China forces dictates. As soon as this happens-world saw some dramatic changes. Whole Indian media is full of Headley-Rana and ISI links and CIA/FBI exposes, Italey arrested two PAK nationals, Arrests in Pakistan.

For a common man like me- this is something too much to handle. What is going on and who is fooling whom ? For a full year, India was begging for a court trial of ONE man and that too was not granted by Pakistan. Dossiers and dossiers were supplied and wars of words were on air but nothing comes out of it except timepass but all of a sudden we see lot of being done and said and this time we see USA coming in focus with agencies like FBI/CIA and as I typed these lines, CIA chief is in India and I am sure they are not talking what media is telling us.

Americans have now openly supported China and had accepted Tibet being part of China. And I am sure very soon we will see China breathing on our necks in Kashmir too. Because slowly slowly voice is coming out and Congress is downplaying it so far. What we are heading into ? A disintegrated Pakistan ? May be..may be because CIA always was intersted in PAKISTAN and infact ALL MILITARY REGIMES WERE BACKED BY US. This is strange that US used to declare…We will not talk with military regime when under the table it was it’s own creation. And later they supported by military and by dollars. [ There are always ways of it- Humanitarian support ! ]

Pakistan has seen so much bloodshed and blasts that schools and colleges are hiring private security personal in Pakistan. But I do not think that this can help anyone, in anyway. You can never win from a man who has come to destroy himself, who has risen above the fear of death. America is providing PAK- military aid and India is paying billions for those aircrafts for which Sh. M M Singh is going to request. This is difference of two nations. One is getting free and other is paying taxpayers money for pleasing BIG BOSS.

Coming time is going to be hard for everyone in Asia. China wants to handle Pakistan and USA too.Who will win ? I do not think USA will be able to make it anymore-because they are under debt of 3 trillion USD and China can sweep away their last breath anytime. This is called economic power.

I am not sure India is in anyway going to be any world power- atleast Congress can not do so. Because once again it is dissecting this nation in small parts, fueling regional parties and dividing them and ruling oer them with ease. With BJP almost a dead body…Congress is enjoying glorious days.

[ Support to MNS and now Maharastra CM asks for more posts for locals- we are once again watching shameless but true face of Indian policitics ]

Trust Not In Lying Words...

In an economy which has lost many people millions of dollars for people involved in Wall Street, the stock market, investing, and housing you would think people would learn where to place their trust, but not yet; I guess. Trusting politicians; whether they be President, Congressman or woman, Senator, or dog catcher we need to constantly keep in mind that all things on this earth, of this earth are temporal or temporary; and do not endure forever.

The people of the prophet’s day were believing that the temple of Jerusalem would endure forever. Had they forgotten that it was made of earthly materials just as their own homes were made or were they vainly trusting the promises of God (Understand I mean their trust is vain; not that God’s promises are vain). In the prophet’s day the people would vainly worship God on the Sabbath day; then forget Him the other six days of the week.

The people of Judah would live for themselves. They would do their business and take advantage of the poor, the widows and orphans; and anyone else there was to take advantage of. During times of tragedy the merchants would increase prices on needed goods; and think they were doing God a service. They cheated people with weights and measures, and chalked it up to and would say, “It’s just business”. Their hearts were far away from God, godliness, and thinking Biblically. They thought rather of “business”, and making more and more.

The prophet Jeremiah tells us:

“Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, are these.” Jeremiah 7:4 (KJV)

The prophet called by God, the door of the Temple, proclaimed to the people to “Amend your ways…” because they were going about their personal and business affairs as though they could get by with their evil deeds because God had promised that their kingdom, and the temple would be forever. Afterall they were the recipients of the word of God, the law of God, the ordinances of God; they need not worry about devotion to God or anything like that.

Lies, lies, and more lies is what the “gainsayers” were saying. “Gainsayers” could be those who are all for profit at the expense of godliness, Biblical living, and righteousness. They are out to make a profit at the expense of the public they supposedly serve. These false prophets are in the business for a profit, and to make as much profit as they possibly can, and to take advantage during times of trouble.

The prophet is calling for Judah to repent of neglecting godliness, repent of their listening to the lying words of the prophets for profit who would tell the people something like, “O, the temple will stand forever. Don’t worry about godliness, righteousness. We are sure and secure in the temple.” Lies, lies and more lies, and the people were perishing, headed for a captivity that would last for 70 years, and destroy the city of Jerusalem, and the temple.

Professing Christians, and deceived-sidetracked Christians of 2009, especially here in the USA can be found trusting in what we call capitalism. Capitalism is about profit; and the businesses of our country are in business to make a profit. There is nothing wrong with making profit; except when it begins to hurt others. When a profit making business does not pass its profits to its employees through bonuses, raises in wages, etc; or when they begin to raise their prices to make it hard or impossible for the poor, widow, orphan or lower wage earner to have a needed product they have become ungodly, and even greedy. Greed is not good. It may be American, but I personally want no part of greed.

Greed is officially taking trust away from God, His Word, and His ordinances, and putting trust in the power [seeming power] of wealth. Just as the people of Jeremiah’s day were trusting in the temple, because of the promise of God, they had made His promises vain by neglecting the right and godly things; trusting in the lies of the lying prophets. They did not amend their ways and ended up in captivity.

If the USA, and especially Christians, fail to amend her ways we too shall fall. We have received warning. We have fallen in status of world leadership to a small extent; but that will become greater. We are in captivity of sorts. Many are in captivity to debt.

The proper place to put our trust is in the Lord our God, the one who died for our sins on the cross of calvary, was buried, and rose again from the grave. He is coming again. Put your trust in Him. “Whosoever will call on the name of the Lord shall be saved”. He is your RIGHTFUL TRUST.

Saxman Village

Credits:  Sunshine Artz template 04, Grand Intention Kit: JSprague Type Red and Yellow Solid papers

The Southernmost sizable city in the state of Alaska is Ketchikan, also known as the salmon capital of the world.  Its economy thrives on tourism and fishing and in the native village of Saxman, tourists flock to view a strand of totem poles some 30-40 feet tall.   Its totem pole park boasts of the single largest collection of totems.

Totem Poles are like billboards, signposts or tombstones, telling stories and honoring heritage.  They used to be mistakenly thought as religious symbols of worships and many were burned as a result.

Good thing original carvers of totem poles still live in the area now known as Alaska’s “Inside Passage” and are members of the Tlingit , Haida and other clans.

In a shed near the village is Tlingit’s famous carver Nathan Jackson.  We got to see his workstation sans the carver.  He is normally there carving but unfortunate for us, he was unavailable at the time of visit.

US Online Gambling Bill Gains Momentum in Congress

Though the notorious UIGEA will be turning into law this December, there is a lot of activity on the other side of the subject that may turn things in the U.S. 180 degrees. There is a strong force in congress that is pushing legislation in the direction of legalized online gambling. At this point, American gambling laws prevent banks from allowing transactions that are used for internet gambling.

Punters can be happy for the activities of Representative Barney Frank, a congressman who is visibly and unabashedly standing up for their rights. Congressman Frank’s intentions were to hold a floor debate in the House of Representatives in the first week of December. Unfortunately, due to holidays and Republican efforts, this seems highly unlikely. Read more…

Open government and municipal data

Several projects having to do with open-access data from governmental and municipal sources have been announced in the past few months. Governments are, of course, already using analytics for a lot of things – this post from A Smarter Planet talks about how the Social Security Administration in the US is “using analytics and predictive modeling to make quicker determinations on disability applications for those in need” and how the US Postal Service is “extracting valuable insights from information on mail delivery to improve on-time delivery performance” (a postal service that improves – now that’s a novelty!), but now (part of) these data will be available to anyone.

In the US, federal data are or will be made available at data.gov. The site seems pretty well-designed, with data sets being queriable online and raw data being downloadable in XML, comma-separated file and other formats. Among the data sets at data.gov, there are some interesting health-related ones like the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database.

The City of San Francisco has its own data clearinghouse, dataSF. Strongly supported by mayor Gavin Newsom, it was launched in August. Given the huge population of programmers in SF, it’s no surprise that mash-up applications using the data started to appear quickly, e.g. “Routesy, which offers directions based on real-time city transport feeds; and EcoFinder, which points you to the nearest recycling site for a given item” (see this Guardian article for more.) New York City has its own NYC Data Mine, which has come under some criticism. It is hosting the BigApps competition, which is meant to “stimulate innovation in the information technology and media industries, and attract and support developer talent to develop web and mobile applications (apps) by using City data.”

The real pioneer in open government data, though, seems to be not the US but Australia. The Australian government recently arranged a “hack day” named GovHack, where they invited programmers to develop mashups and applications around government data during 24h intense hours. Some of the projects that came out of this event were:

The overall winners LobbyClue, by a team comprising members many of whom had never met before the event. LobbyClue is an in-depth visualisation of lobbying groups’ relations to government agencies, including tenders awarded, links between the various agencies, and physical office locations

It’s buggered, mate, In true Australian style, allows you to report buggered toilets, roads, etc, with an easy-to-use graphical interface overlayed on a map. Their idea was to combine this with local government services to fix issues in the community. Built by a team of developers from Lonely Planet.

Know where you live, a stylish presentation of ABS data (along with Flickr Geocoded photos), pulling in relevant information for a particular postcode: rental rates, average income, crime rates, and more. Built by a team of developers who work at News Digital Media.

Pretty cool, isn’t it?

Economic illiteracy 101

Usually, I don’t act disrespectful (unless your name starts with K and ends with rugman) against people who clearly have much more education in economics than I do. Well, maybe I do, but usually I add a disclaimer that my conclusions aren’t based on an official economic education, rather something I usually refer to as “logic”, which is in effect in what people generally call “reality”. With that being said, I have to jump on this article. It is clearly written by someone who wishes to make a point, and tailors his argument to fit that point (and to make things worse – tries to make Ludvig von Mises complicit in this fraud) :

“President Obama’s arrival in China has predictably generated all manner of commentary about the economic relationship between it and the United States. Not surprisingly, the majority of the commentary has been economically untrue, misguided, or both. First up is the notion that China artificially keeps the value of the yuan lower than it would naturally be. What this commentary misses is that currencies aren’t commodities, rather they are concepts. Nothing else.”

The nonsense begins. If the central bank of china didn’t stock-pile dollars, what would it be worth? If this doesn’t affect the value of the US dollar, why don’t we do an experiment and dump $2 trillion on the forex markets. According to the author of this article, it wouldn’t change the value of the US dollar? The reason that the actions of the chinese central bank matters is that :

1 ) China’s exporters accept payment in dollars, not in yuan, thus the central bank of china affect the value of the yuan towards the USD when it trades in these dollars for yuan.

2 ) The result is pretty obvious – an enormous trade deficits. If the central bank of china didn’t accept an infinite amount of dollars from chinese exporters, these would end up on the forex market. This would mean an amount equal to the US-China trade deficit per month. Try dumping that amount on the forex market EACH MONTH and see if you find any buyers under a fixed-rate-exchange policy. There would be a desperate shortage of yuan, and an overflow of dollars.

“In that sense, China is one of many countries that pegs its currency to the dollar in order achieve for it a measure of credibility due to the dollar being the world’s currency. Much as trade among the fifty states in the U.S. is made more frequent thanks to there being a common currency, the yuan’s stable relationship with the dollar is what has fostered a great deal of trade between individuals in the U.S. and China. Trade is the reason we produce, and currency stability facilitates trade.”

A rather erronous comparison, because China does not use dollars as their own currency. Nor is the US dollar exchangable for any real asset (gold, for instance) that can be used to gauge what the yuan should really be worth. Currency stability is a good thing, but printing immense amounts of paper currency and relying on a foreign central bank to sop it up to create “currency stability” is not the way to go. The reason that the US dollar is falling against ALL CURRENCIES EXCEPT THE YUAN is that other central banks do not wish to become paper dollar storage facilities. People who receive dollars in trade want their own currencies back, so they trade dollars for domestic currency. Regardless of if this goes through a central bank or other clearing institute, unless the dollars are stockpiled they end up on the forex market.

Many commentators seek an absence of policy whereby the yuan and dollar would float against each other as “fundamentals” warrent, but as Von Mises so clearly saw, floating currencies “complicate the technique of exchange” given the basic truth that uncertain currency values make it more difficult for producers to confidently use money in order to transact. Money is merely a medium of exchange, and the less uncertainty we have, the better off all parties to trade are.

Mises was correct – it is preferable if currencies keep their value. But if the yuan was truly fixed to the dollar, without any stockpiling by the Chinese central bank, then there would be a shortage of yuan and a surplus of dollars. Chinese exporters would not be able to exchange their dollars for yuan – and would thus stop accepting dollars, and demand payment in yuan. US importers would not be able to retrieve any yuan for the same reason. During a fixed-exchange-rate regime, two outcomes are possible :

  • If currencies are pegged to gold, there is an outflow of gold from the country with the trade deficit to the country with the trade surplus if the central bank accomodates this.
  • If currencies are not pegged to gold, or the central bank of the trade surplus nation refuses to accomodate the trade surplus by printing paper currency and stockpiling the trading partners currency (like China is currently doing) there will be a shortage of the currency of the trade surplus nation, and a surplus of the currency of the trade deficit country. This can only be resolved by revaluating the currencies against eachother, thus it becomes a floating-exchange-rate regime

Looking at the yuan, it’s “settled logic” among the commentariat that currencies must reflect an economy’s fundamentals, but not only is this untrue, it perverts the reason for currencies altogether. Indeed, when individuals trade, they’re not trading money, instead they’re using money in order to measure the value of goods so that goods can be exchanged. That is why currencies are meant to be stable value concepts, rather than floating paper values lacking any definition.

More nonsense. In a fixed-rat-currencty environment, there would not be enough US goods for the Chinese to purchase, as compared to the Chinese goods for the US to purchase. This would lead to the Chinese not wanting dollars. For currencies to be stable-value concepts, there has to be equal production of goods and services in both nations, as well as equal amounts of currency printing.

As to the absurd suggestion that currencies are supposed to reflect economic fundamentals, this might surprise those who watched Japan’s yen triple in value versus gold during its near two decade recession. This might also surprise Americans who witnessed a much more vibrant U.S. economy vis-à-vis England’s in the aftermath of World War II; all this occurring despite the pound being stronger than the dollar. It would be more realistic to say that excessive currency strength or weakness is an economic retardant, as opposed to the result of economic strength or weakness.

The yuan tripling in value against gold is not hard to explain. Japan is a massive trade surplus country, so it is natural that their currency appreciate against other currencies. The gold price was sinking due to either lack of demand or manipulation until 2001, which further pushes the yen/gold ratio down. The reason that the US was better off after WWII than the UK has little to do with the relative value of the currencies – it has to do with a better business climate. Artificial currency rates are an economic retardant. Why is it that the US has a crippled manufacturing sector and no reserves, while China has an enormous manufacturing sector and enormous (worthless) dollar reserves? Why is it that americans consume vastly more in relation to their production than Chinese do? Artificial currency rates, as maintained by the Chinese central bank.

“Currencies once again aren’t supposed to move in value, because when they do the changes in value distort the money prices of all investments and transactions. The whole point of the Bretton Woods gold standard wasn’t for currencies to float, but for them to be tied to the dollar so that peaceful trade could reliably occur among individuals around the world. Stable currencies not only enhance wealth-enhancing trade, but they free up those engaged in mere economic facilitation (think currency traders, hedge funds) to actually produce economic goods thanks to floating money values no longer being an economic variable.”

As preferable as it would be to have currencies maintain their relative value, this requires either a gold standard, or strict, co-ordinated, disciplined central banks all over the world. Needless to say, no central bank has ever been able to withstand the pressure to print for the sake of the short-term gain. In addition to this, it would necessitate equally valued production by all nations, which is a laughable idea in the world of today. But it is indeed correct that the resources used in economic facilitation could be vastly cut down if central banks tied down the value of their currencies. It cannot, however, be done in the way China does it, something the US will soon experience.

“Lastly, implicit in the jawboning of China for its yuan policy is the assumption that somehow its citizens don’t suffer from the same currency weakness that now weighs down the U.S. economy. More realistically, inflation is death by a thousand cuts anywhere it exists, which means the unseen is how much China’s economy would be growing if U.S. monetary policy weren’t transferring an to inflation it. China is not aided by our inflationary policies as evidenced by its need to import all sorts of goods to create finished products, so it’s naïve for anyone to assume that China is enjoying the decline of its currency thanks to our irresponsible Treasury.”

The only correct point in the entire article. China is NOT enjoying their currency falling together with the US dollar. They are being empoverished by it. The reason they put themselves through this is the governments wish for political stability, which is hard to maintain during large economic shifts. Changing from an export economy to a stable economy that consumes equal to its production is such a change, because millions of exporters need to go out of business and become producers for the domestic market. This is undesirable from a Chinese government point of view, so instead they stockpile worthless dollars and eat american inflation.

Next up is the myth offered up by the Daily Telegraph’s Ambrose Evans-Pritchard (among others) which suggests that with its artificially cheap currency, China is exporting deflation. Comments like this merely prove that many who write on economics don’t have a clue what deflation is.

This is wrong beyond the line of ridiculous. If one country actively stockpiles another country’s currency, then this reduces the supply of this currency. Deflation is a reduction in the money supply of a currency. Even in the case where China uses the dollars to purchase US government bonds, this still causes an excess demand for US dollars, and removes a certain amount of dollars from circulation because there are always a number of dollars in the process of being cleared by the Chinese central bank and being exchanged for US Treasuries. It isn’t Chinese exporters that accept US Treasuries in payment, it is the Chinese central banks that buys treasuries after its exchanged USD for yuan. Thus, there is always a certain amount of USD existing somewhere between when the chinese exporter receives payment and the chinese central bank transferring these dollars to someone else in exchange for Treasuries.

It’s worth noting, however, that while stockpiling US dollars is deflationary for all other holders of USD, Treasuries actually counteract this effect somewhat by enabling the US government to spend more money – and we all know that excess government spending is highly inflationary.

“Secondly, the import of cheap Chinese goods is in no way deflationary. That is so because if cheap Chinese shoes allow individuals to spend $50 on loafers when they used to spend $100, that merely gives them $50 of new demand for a wider range of goods, thus driving up the costs of other goods previously demanded less. The broad price level by definition cannot be changed by imports; instead it can only move up or down based on changes in the value of money. In that case, all signs point to inflation worldwide, the U.S. Treasury the main miscreant in this regard.”

This is so utterly moronic that it makes you want to cry. If something is cheaper, it doesn’t drive down the general price of goods, because the money saved from purchasing a cheap good (over an expensive good) will be used purchasing something else, thus driving the price of that good up. Yes, but not by an equal offsetting amount. Unless you didn’t think of it, you now get two goods at the price of one. This is only possible if the price of these two goods taken together falls. And when Friedman said that “inflation/deflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon”, he didn’t mean that a collapse in production cannot cause higher prices. And there will be inflation worldwide, until foreign central banks stop printing to accomodate their own short-term economic goals. The US will have even worse inflation, because the US government will crowd out the US consumer.

“The third impoverishing myth possessing many adherents is the one that says China is pursuing an “export strategy.” If we ignore the certain truth that countries don’t trade, to suggest a country is pursuing an export strategy is as idiotic as the suggestion that a country could pursue an “import strategy.”  Good luck importing unless you’re exporting. “

Re-read what I wrote about stockpiling dollars to maintain an oversized export sector. If you are willing to eat someone elses price inflation then you can export more than you import. If someone else is willing to eat yours, you can print enough money to import more than you export. Like the US is doing.

“What’s forgotten is that exports and imports are but two sides of the same coin, and unless the supposed “experts” in our midst believe that Chinese producers are exporting in order to remain impoverished, there’s no such thing as an export strategy. In truth, the dollars taken in by Chinese producers are either used to buy U.S. products, equities, land and debt, or they’re traded to others with designs on what we have in the United States. Individuals export so that they can import, which means that to the extent U.S. citizens are complimented by a great deal of imports, that means they’re also exporting something of value in order to have the means to buy imports.

Von Mises once observed that “Economic history is the story of the gradual extension of the economic community beyond its original limits of the single household to embrace the nation and then the world.” That’s exactly what’s happening right now, and stable currency relationships are bringing the producers of the world closer and closer on a daily basis.

So rather than nonsensical commentary that perverts the purpose of currencies, we should embrace any measures taken that enable more, not less in the way of cross-border trade. In that sense, we should hope that more countries follow China’s responsible lead in pegging the yuan to the dollar, all the while hoping that monetary authorities in the U.S. wake up to the economy retarding inflation they’re foisting on the world, which threatens the wonderful process whereby individuals the world over are becoming more, rather than less economically interconnected.”

The US citizen is unfortunately under-exporting : Has the author never heard the term trade deficit. What is being exported is paper dollars and US debt, which are used for stockpiling. As long as this is OK with everyone involved, then there isn’t a problem. Unfortunately, it has lead to an economic imbalance that isn’t sustainable, because debt has to be serviced, and once again the US dollar will collapse if these exported and subsequently stockpiled dollars are put to use.

Please, dear economic commentators, do not write things that can be debunked by an amateurish blogger like me. It really is frustrating to have to tell professional economists and writers that they are utterly wrong all the time…..
